AESTHETICS OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE - DESIGN IMPACTS

In this installment of the series “The Aesthetics of Sustainable Architecture,” I would like to present principles in which sustainable construction has a direct influence on design. Sustainability is not merely a technical parameter; it transforms architecture itself and, in turn, our perception of the city and space.
Upon closer inspection, the aesthetics of sustainable architecture are evident not only in the concepts or the technology used, but also in the visible form of a building. While traditional construction projects often rely on standard solutions, climate-responsive construction gives rise to new forms of expression. The building’s materials and inherent structure reveal a different approach to the use of resources.

KEY FACTORS: HOW SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION IS CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE
If we break down “sustainable building” into its fundamental principles, we can identify three key aspects that shape the aesthetics of architecture. These principles form the foundation of my artistic practice.
1. Joining
Climate-friendly approach:
Building components are joined in such a way that they can be sorted by type and reused during demolition (Design for Disassembly). Screw and snap-fit connections are used instead of adhesives. This allows buildings to be used as true reservoirs of raw materials.
Aesthetic approach:
By combining various reclaimed materials with new ones, unconventional compositions are created that have an architecturally compelling effect.
The joints between the materials may remain visible. The circular character of the structure becomes a defining element of the design.

2. Materiality
Climate-friendly approach:
Renewable raw materials such as wood and hemp, as well as recycled building components, are prioritized because their production and installation result in significantly lower CO2 emissions compared to, for example, conventional concrete.
Aesthetic approach:
Natural materials shape the atmosphere of a space through their warm texture and structure. Reused materials, such as weathered bricks or weathered facade elements, tell their own story through their history, lending the building a distinctive character and authenticity.

3. Renovation and preservation of existing housing stock
Climate-friendly approach:
The most resource-efficient approach lies in preserving and thoughtfully upgrading the existing housing stock. Energy-efficient renovations contribute to a drastic reduction in CO₂ emissions.
At the same time, preserving the existing housing stock helps maintain affordable rents and thus has a significant social impact.
Aesthetic approach:
The renovation and repair work creates an architectural sense of continuity. Restored details, exposed historic structures, and the deliberate juxtaposition of old and new generate a captivating visual depth that carries forward the building’s identity and history.

CONCLUSION:
SUSTAINABILITY IS RESHAPING ARCHITECTURE
The aesthetics of sustainable architecture stem from a particular philosophy. The resulting architectural implications transform facades, proportions, and materials—in short, the face of our built environment.
The construction industry may seem “immobile,” but some projects already being implemented in this way prove that change is possible—and that sustainable building is not only ecologically sound but also architecturally exciting. What examples come to mind where sustainability...
