BRUTAL MINIMAL
THE SITUATION
The Ihme-Zentrum is a building that characterizes the cityscape from a wide perspective. It is mainly used as a residential and office building. The massiveness and variety of shapes and colors of the upper floors can be seen from a great distance. When you get closer to the building, however, you can see an almost completely fallow ground floor area. As the building is located in the very lively Linden-Mitte district and directly on a river, this untapped potential is surprising. One of the few facilities located on the ground floor is the "Galerie Brutal". The rooms of the Gallery are also heavily damaged by their dilapidated condition.
ARTISTIC INTERVENTION
As part of a solo exhibition, this contradiction between the building's strong charisma and a ground floor zone that was screaming for upgrading was discussed. The creative radiance of the brutalist architecture was made tangible through photographs and brought together through large-format murals reduced to geometric shapes, which were developed directly from the shapes and colors of the building.
The question arises as to how the potential, due to its visibility and location, can be put to a meaningful use despite or especially with the private property situation.
